GCFO Blog 17: Making your New Year's resolutions stick

NY resolutions - our best tips to make them stick!

So what is a New Year's resolution? Something that goes in one year and out the other… But not this time! We’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you stick to your new year's resolutions.

Make a list

Write down your goals for the year and stick them somewhere you will be constantly reminded of them. Try the fridge, bathroom mirror or your forehead if that works for you. Your resolutions should be specific and achievable. No more saying “I’m going to lose weight this year” or “I’m going to save more money”...   Instead, write it down, “I’m going to work out at the gym 3 days a week for all of January” or “I will spend less money on groceries by shopping at GCFO twice a week for the rest of the year.”   By having more realistic goals that are achievable, you will avoid setting yourself up for failure.

Focus on one main goal

It can be overwhelming if you give yourself too many goals to achieve all at once. Instead, choose one thing you are really determined to achieve during the year and focus solely on that one goal. All of the other resolutions can come at a time where you are less preoccupied and when you’re on track to achieving your main goal.

Make it a habit

Science says it takes approximately 21 days to form a new habit. With that in mind, know that making your resolution stick will require a lot of work and commitment throughout the majority of January… You can help yourself through the hard yards by surrounding yourself with #inspo and rewarding yourself when you are progressing.   Hint: Make a mood board and checklist!

Track your progress

You’ll never know if you’re reaching your goals if you aren’t measuring it in some way. Depending on your goal you can use measures such as time spent working out that week or how many homemade healthy meals you made or how much you saved by shopping at GCFO!

Keep it on the downlow

Research shows that voicing your goals too early can give you a feeling of premature accomplishment and derail your actual achievement. So keep in mind it’s better to be a quiet achiever and then shout it from the rooftops when you feel confident you’ve made your resolution stick!

So there you have it. Make sure you make the most of your New Year's Eve, by being prepared for the month ahead if you have ambitious goals in mind.

By following these tips, you will be sure to make your resolutions stick and make 2020 the best year yet!
