GCFO Blog 18: Preparing the Ultimate Cheese Board.

Happy cheese lovers day!

What better way to celebrate the god sent food than by creating the ultimate cheese board. We’ve put together a step by step guide to create a really Gouda cheese board.

Step One: Cheese

The idea of a cheese board is to have a variety of cheeses so your guests can try out every single combination of cheese and accompaniments. We recommend grabbing three or four different style cheeses so you can experiment. Soft, medium and hard cheeses will give your guests a taste of everything. For a soft cheese try goat’s cheese.  Brie or Camembert. Cheddar, Gouda, Havarti and Fontina are great semi- hard cheeses. And for hard cheeses, try Parmesan, Vintage Gouda or Gorgonzola. This way you’ll have an assortment of flavours and textures for every appetite.

Step Two: Accompaniments

For accompaniments, think anything that is cheese and cracker stackable that bring added flavours. You can use nuts such as raw almonds, salted pistachios and cashews. Fruits are also a great idea to add some sweetness. Try strawberries, blueberries, dried apricots, grapes and figs.   Dips are also a must. There are so many varieties of dips nowadays, so selection is completely up to you. From our experience, we love a good avocado dip, sun dried tomato pesto dip and hummus.   Note: Whatever you do, don’t forget the marinated olives!

Step Three: Servers

Now, to stack all of those cheeses and accompaniments, you’re going to need good, solid foundations. Crackers are a must and again, you can select any flavours that you love or think will compliment the elements on the cheese board. As well as crackers, you can try toasted bread, baguettes, chips and breadsticks.

Step Four: Meats

To add some extra flavour, make sure to pick up some cold meats. Typically, a great cheese board will include pancetta, salami, prosciutto, salmon, ham or pate. Once again, just select a few of your favourites and you’re almost there.

Step Five: Presentation

The golden rule of a cheese board: If it’s not Instagram worthy, it’s not finished. Firstly, set out your cheeses as the main feature of the board. It’s their day today and they must be celebrated! Next, add meats and accompaniments surrounding the cheeses. Try to arrange so to spread out the colours and make it as eye catching as possible. Add some greenery such as thyme, mint, bean sprouts or edible flowers to garnish your cheese board.

Now just grab some wine, take an insta pic and there you have it, the ultimate, Instagrammable cheese board to celebrate Cheese Lovers Day!
